Description: Ethiopia is considered the birthplace of coffee. The plant, with a white blossom that smells like jasmine and a red, cherry-like fruit, was discovered in Ethiopia in the 11th century. Many folklores surround how the actual coffee drink came into existence. Most accounts depict nomadic people who noticed the unusual activity of birds or goats that ate the unusual coffee fruit; upon trying the fruit themselves, the nomads also became invigorated. They experimented with how to make the fruit more palatable, and found that steeping it in water produced a fragrant drink. Despite varying stories of how the drink originated, coffee was at first used primarily in religious ceremonies because of its supposed mystic powers. Over its long history, coffee has at times even been banned for general consumption. Thank goodness we live in modern times! Yirgacheffe coffee grown in southern Ethiopia is often favored for its mild, fruit-like and aromatic flavors.
